Modern Languages Education

At St. Margaret’s, we strive to help our students become global citizens. We believe that learning an additional language besides English and Chinese is only natural, as young pupils naturally navigate multilingual environments. Not only that, as what Frank Smith said, "One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way". This acquisition of a third language will definitely lead students to more opportunities in the future.

Curriculum

The Modern Languages’ Department consists of four language subjects at SMCESPS: French, German, Japanese and Spanish. All four subjects are now offered as compulsory subjects for primary students and an elective for secondary students in order to give our students an edge in communication.

In Primary One and Two, students are taught a different third language throughout the two school terms so as to have a taste of the language before deciding which language they will choose to study from the beginning of Primary Three.

Public and International Examinations

Students are equipped with the means to succeed in world recognized qualifications by offering exams such as the French DELF, Spanish DELE, German Fit in Deutsch and Japanese JLPT, enabling them to receive internationally recognized certificates in foreign languages, as well as preparing them for Hong Kong DSE Category C Examinations.

Overseas Study Tour

Our school puts huge effort in establishing very good partnerships with 5 prestigious schools in Europe. Every year, exchanges or study tours are organized for Modern Language students to acquire an international outlook. Through the study tours, not only can they discover another culture first hand, but students can also utilize their third language to communicate with native speakers of the target language, make friends from other countries and develop self-confidence and self-discipline.

We also welcome students from our sister schools to Hong Kong who stay with local families. By doing so, our students will have a chance and opportunity to use the target language in real life and real situations.
